We have an exciting new opportunity for a Principal Scientist – Sustainability, to join our Chemical Development Team.
In Chemical Development we are determined to push the boundaries of science to deliver medicines to our patients. We combine people’s technical knowledge and understanding with their talent and drive to design, develop and optimise synthetic routes and processes that deliver the active pharmaceutical ingredients of our medicines in a sustainable, commercially viable way. We believe in innovation and continuous improvement, working closely with colleagues in academia and across industry, to ensure that we apply the newest technologies and principles in the processes we develop.
What you’ll do
As the Principal Scientist for Sustainability, you will be a role model for scientific leadership across Chemical Development, and the wider organisation, and will have an external reputation of impact. In this role you will drive continuous improvement across drug substance value streams and within your own area of responsibility, as well as sponsoring and leading activities within the department.
You will have a direct impact on the development strategy across drug project portfolio and will input into Intellectual Property strategy for projects. The Principal Scientist will coach and lead Chemical Development scientific staff and will have an awareness of the status of key technical challenges and opportunities across the entire drug project portfolio. Using insight you will influence departmental strategy, including direct involvement in long term programmes. You will be proactive in linking scientists together, promoting collaboration and building technical communities across disciplines by understanding the industry and AZ business context and drive S&T and drug project strategy to add value.
In addition you will;
Develop holistic sustainability strategy and ensure delivery of plans & commitments through others to ensure Chemical Development contributions are Industry leading
Influence the development of the wider business ‘Ambition Zero carbon’ strategy and transform drug substance development and manufacturing approaches to achieve this.
Influence the definition of sustainability strategy for other research groups external to Chemical Development
Ensure sustainability is incorporated into the Chemical Development business process for all projects.
Identify investment needs and create capital and revenue business cases to deliver both Chemical Development and wider AZ sustainability vision
Identify external partners/academic collaborators and define funding opportunities to deliver innovation and improvement activities
Champion sustainability activities to all audiences internally and externally, creating a ‘Best in Industry’ reputation
Ensure effective sustainability governance, knowledge management and appropriate metrics exists for all projects to drive improvements
Seek and obtain membership and leadership of external sustainability fora (eg. ACS GCIPR).
Enhance external profile and reputation of AZ relating to sustainability, including collaboration with academic and other industry groups
Advocate with external agencies and bodies on critical sustainability targets and topics
Essential Criteria:
BSc/PhD level education in a relevant discipline
Significant experience working within a Research & Development and Manufacturing environment, within the pharmaceutical industry
Possess a detailed understanding of drug development and how Chemical Development contributes to this
Extensive experience of the disciplines within Chemical Development and how they combine to deliver commercial manufacturing processes and control strategies
Thorough understanding of the principles and management of SHE and cGMP
Strong external profile demonstrating scientific leadership
Demonstration of collaborative and multi-disciplinary team working to deliver a range of science and technology and drug project objectives
Proven experience in developing the capability of individuals and teams of scientists and in supporting project teams through effective coaching and technical mentoring
Skilled in effective communication across a range of skills and experience levels
Desirable Requirements:
Experience in developing a Sustainability strategy and to achieve targets for drug substance development and manufacture
Working knowledge of other departments who contribute to the drug development process
