The Scientific Update Ltd team recently worked with an amazing group of women to run the first ‘Empowering Women In Organic Chemistry Europe‘ Conference and it was fantastic to read all the positive reviews after the event. It was such an enriching and rewarding day full of positivity. Everyone who participated was totally open and interested to hear and share stories (both good and bad)!
Our Director Claire Francis shares these comments below. Claire was absolutely buzzing for days after the event!
‘What an amazing and inspirational day we had at #EWOCEU23 yesterday. I am still buzzing from the energy and openess of all the fantastic attendees at this first ‘Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry Europe’ Conference in Manchester. Inspired by #EWOC (founded in the US) a UK committee dedicated to the advancement and support of women in STEM have worked tirelessly towards this event over the last 3 years. We could not have been happier. The plenary speakers Anne O’Kearney-McMullan , Monica H. Perez-Temprano , Natalie Fey and Katherine Wheelhouse gave organic chemistry based talks, but also opened up about their own careers and personal journeys and struggles. Four early career chemists, selected from over 20 applicants: Aisha Bismillah, Hannah Broderick Cristina García Morales, Ph.D. Helena Hutchins presented their current work. STEM Coach Hannah Roberts, Ph.D. led two inspiring workshops on career fulfilment and Imposter Syndrome and had the entire audience participating and sharing stories and experiences. It was wonderful to experience the willingness to share and the engagement by all. We also enjoyed plenty of networking opportunities and 30 poster presentations from students in our Marketplace.
Huge thanks to all our sponsors who provide the funding to enable free attendance to students and academics. Awards to recognise excellence were presented to Aisha Bismullah for best speaker and Hannah Wootton, Jasmine Catlow and Rabia Ayub for best posters.
Looking forward to expanding our reach to more European countries for next years event.
Thanks everyone, especially all our committee members for a wonderfully empowering day!!

Events Director Hannah May was equally buzzing and shared these lovely comments;-
‘There are events you organise that are great but sometimes you are very lucky enough to organise events that make a difference! Empowering Women in Organic Chemisty Europe #EWOCEU23 certainly was an honour and a pleasure to co-ordinate – to see and witness the amazing group of talented delegates engage and enjoy the conference was so fantastic.
Massive thanks goes to the Steering Committee who all have such busy and important day jobs – to my amazing partner in crime Claire Francis and the rest of the team Catherine Holden, Katherine Hazel, Katherine Wheelhouse, Daniella Cheang, Ivan Marziano , Julie Reilly, Olivia Boyd, Robert Crook , and Louis Diorazio, thanks also to the rest of the Scientific Update Ltd Team where this also wouldn’t have been possible John Studley, Phoebe McGuane, Vicky Atkins, Helen Spencer
This certainly is highest on the list as memorable and can’t wait to get organising 2024!
