Continuous Flow Techniques for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing at Lonza

While commodity chemicals are usually produced in thoroughly optimised continuous production plants, pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals are typically synthesised in general-purpose stirred tank reactors. Stirred tank reactors are easy to operate, and can be used for a wide range of processes. However, despite their long history and prevalence in synthesis laboratories, batch-type reactors have several well-recognized limitations. Continuous flow processes offer the potential to reduce production costs, increase product yield and product consistency, and strengthen process robustness. Process development and scale-up is facilitated if continuous flow reactors are adopted in the early stages of a synthesis.

In this talk, the advantages and challenges of continuous flow processes will be discussed. Case Studies from Lonza’s laboratories will be presented to demonstrate the versatility of continuous processing in the field of API manufacturing.
