ChemTides: Developing Sustainable Methods for the Large-Scale Manufacture of Pharmaceuticals Containing Nucleosides

Recent medical breakthroughs have exposed a critical gap between the demand for nucleoside containing pharmaceuticals, and the ability of existing chemical methods for their sustainable large-scale synthesis. For example, current solid phase methods for synthesizing oligonucleotides are limited to preparing batches <10 kg whereas the demand for these products is now reaching multi-ton quantities. Also, solid phase methods typically generate over 1000 kg of waste per kg of product obtained. (R. Obexer et al Science 2024, 384 (6692), eadl4015. https://doi.org/10.1126/science.adl4015).

ChemTides aims to provide a forum for process scientists to present and discuss progress towards novel synthetic methodologies to deliver nucleoside and nucleotide building blocks, and then incorporate them into larger pharmaceutical targets. Our initial event was a FREE half-day webinar held on Monday 25th November from 3:00-7:00 pm UK
