An Introduction to Powder Technology Short Course

What's Next After Crystallization?

Date: 25 March - 26 March 2024

Location: Online Platform

Tutors: Mr Robert Peeling

This short, on-line course aims to give scientists and technologists a practical appreciation of the real-world problems to be addressed and the underlying principles that need to be understood to handle powders and other particulate materials successfully during chemical and physical processing.  The course will be divided up into two sessions, as follows:

Monday, March 25 | 2.00pm – 4.30pm GMT
Tuesday, March 26 | 2.00pm – 4.30pm GMT

The course will start with ways of characterising the material and derived properties of a powder and how these relate to likely behaviour during processing. It will then move on to apply an understanding of how forces make particles move to conveying, metering, and controlling the flow of powders. Whole system thinking will be applied to consider both the impacts of the overall set of changes occurring to the particles during processing and the impact of the surrounding environment. Finally, some aspects of the influence of surface chemistry on processability will be considered.

Course outline

  1. Powder characterisation and behaviour
    • Particle structures
    • Powder properties and behaviour
    • Particle size and shape characterisation
  2. Principles of particle handling
    • How particles move – force balances
    • Effects of shape and solids concentration
    • Fluidisation
  3. Making powders flow
    • Hopper design
    • Pneumatic, vacuum, and mechanical conveying
    • Controlling powder flow – types of feed systems
  4. Whole system considerations

Who should attend

This short course will be particularly helpful for people who have attended Understanding Polymorphism and Crystallization Issues in the Pharmaceutical Industry and more generally to anyone who wants to know more about particle processing and handling technology once a particle has been synthesised or crystallized from solution. After the course, delegates should be better equipped to consider scale-up and technology transfer risks where particles handling is involved through understanding the nature and behaviour of real particles.

What's Included

The course fee includes:

  • Link to watch two live sessions
  • Electronic version of the course manual*
  • Course certificate

For this on line course, there will be no recordings available and *the e reader manual is NOT printable or downloadable (due to copyright).  If you prefer a hard copy of the manual you will have the opportunity of purchasing a professionally printed hard copy during the booking process.
