Event overview

Course tutors: Dr Jonathan Moseley

This course aims to help scientists, engineers and others who need to write scientific or technical content, to tailor their writing to an appropriate “scientific register”. It will focus primarily on scientific and technical reports within business and industry, academic theses and journal articles. Other formats requiring some scientific or technical content, such as technical product reports and business proposals will also be covered briefly. Specific features common to scientific, technical and academic writing will be discussed, along with which features to avoid. Practical advice will be given on structuring and writing reports and theses, including helpful hints and tips. Additional features regarding graphics, experimental data, referencing, proof-reading, the journal submission process and managing generative AI, will also be presented.

There will be scope for both planned and spontaneous interaction (Q&A), and slides will be leavened with visuals and apposite quotations.

This online course will take place over two live sessions, on the following dates and times:

The Introduction will briefly address the temptation to use Chat GPT to write your scientific report (and why you shouldn’t use it, in this case), as well as some factors to consider when writing in English, and the potential problems of Communication generally.

The Main Section will then consider types of scientific writing, followed by specific features common in them, before leading into the structures typical of scientific reports. Substantial practical advice on writing will pull all these aspects together, followed by some more minor hints and tips for further consideration.

Ancillary Sections on types of graphic, including when and how to employ them best; experimental sections and patents; referencing; and proof-reading are followed by a worked example. A further section on writing for journals, and specific advice on the journal submission process will be given, followed by a final section considering other types of format requiring some scientific and technical writing content.
