Course tutors: Dr Wim Dermaut

This course on chemical and process safety is designed for development chemists who are active in the field of chemical process scale-up, offering essential knowledge to ensure safety in chemical research and industrial processes. The course covers the fundamental principles of chemical safety hazard identification, testing, and risk assessment, focusing on the challenges faced by chemist’s working in process development.  Participants will learn about the properties of hazardous chemicals and safe handling and storage procedures, how to find relevant safety data and how to assess specific reactivity hazards of chemicals with a strong emphasis on heat release, gas release and thermal stability.

Key topics include chemical reactivity hazards, thermal runaway reactions, and the principles of process safety management.  Special attention is given to scale up from lab to pilot plant, highlighting the potential hazards and safety measures required at each stage.  The course will help participants understand how to anticipate and prevent incidents and accidents and develop safer processes.

Through detailed case studies, attendees will develop a robust understanding of how to implement safety protocols in their work environment, minimising risk to personnel equipment and the environment.  By the end of the course, attendees will have an appreciation of the principles important for safe scale-up and be equipped with the necessary tools to contribute to a culture of safety in their organisations.

This online course will take place over four afternoon sessions, see below times and dates.

Timings for each session
