POSITION SUMMARY:
Working within our state of the art laboratories at Sandwich, your role will be to design and develop new routes to APIs (Active Pharmaceuticals Ingredients) and execute experimentally in the laboratory. You would create and develop safe, robust, scalable and efficient chemical processes to manufacture pharmaceuticals. You would be responsible for the transfer of these chemical processes to scale up facilities and ultimately for manufacturing.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To design new routes to APIs and execute experimentally in the laboratory: Utilise literature, computational tools, retrosynthetic analysis and knowledge to support new route design. Participation in route design brainstorms.
- Design develop and scale-up new and existing routes to pharmaceuticals: Utilise literature, computational tools and knowledge to support new route design, reaction design and experimental design.
- Design and develop safe, robust, scalable and efficient manufacturing processes for intermediates and APIs, for use on pilot plant and commercial scales.
- Practical synthetic organic chemistry: The role is laboratory based. You will be able to carry out all aspects of practical work and to execute experiments in a safe manner, design experiments, identify and optimise reactions, design and develop workups and isolations, analyse and characterise products.
- Matrix technical management: Responsible for the scientific direction of work packages or projects. May mentor and direct other colleagues providing technical guidance.
- Partner closely with process engineers, crystallisation experts, process safety scientists, analysts and scale-up facility staff to develop right first time high quality processes.
- Present their work clearly and concisely to stakeholders, both internally and externally, through written and verbal communications. Contribute to regulatory submission authoring as well as technology transfer documentation to research and commercial manufacturing sites.
ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
You will liaise with other CRD chemists, Process Engineers, Process Safety Chemists, Crystallisation Technologists, Pilot Plant facility staff (API-M), Analytical, Formulation and Manufacturing colleagues at Sandwich and other Global Pfizer sites. Externally you may have contact with other Pharmaceutical companies, external consultants & contractors.
QUALIFICATIONS
You will have gained a PhD or Postdoc in organic synthesis, with an honours degree in chemistry (or a related discipline) and have worked in an academic setting or industrial laboratories.
TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
- Excellent knowledge of retro synthesis and route design
- Outstanding broad knowledge of synthetic reagents, methodology, reaction mechanisms, reaction work-ups and isolations
- Proven application of theoretical knowledge in the laboratory
- Proficient in all laboratory, analytical and characterization techniques
- Rational, innovative and creative approach to problem solving
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within high performing teams as well as independently
- Ability to apply learnings to new situations and problems
- Good trouble-shooter, able to support the decision making process to solve moderate problems
