C. Oliver Kappe received his diploma- (1989) and his doctoral (1992) degrees in organic chemistry from the University of Graz where he worked with Professor Gert Kollenz on cycloaddition and rearrangement reactions of acylketenes. After periods of postdoctoral research work on reactive intermediates and matrix isolation spectroscopy with Professor Curt Wentrup at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia (1993- 1994) and on synthetic methodology/ alkaloid synthesis with Professor Albert Padwa at Emory University in Atlanta, USA (1994-1996), he moved back to the University of Graz in 1996 to start his independent academic career. He obtained his “Habilitation” in 1998 in organic chemistry and was appointed Associate Professor in 1999. Since 2011 he holds the position of Professor of “Technology of Organic Synthesis” (Organische Synthesetechnologie) at the University of Graz. He has spent time as visiting scientist/professor at e.g. the Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, USA, Professor K. Barry Sharpless, 2003), the Toyko Institute of Technology (Toyko, Japan, Professor T. Takahashi, 2008), the University of Sassari (Sassari, Italy, 2008), the Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research (Orlando, USA, 2010) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2013). The co-author of more than 300 publications, his main research interests have in the past focused on multicomponent reactions, combinatorial chemistry and the synthesis of biologically active heterocycles. More recently his research group has focused on the use of enabling and process intensification technologies for synthetic chemistry, including microwave and continuous flow processing. For his innovative work in microwave chemistry he received the 2004 Prous Science Award from the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and the 2010 Houska Prize (€ 100.000) in addition to a number of other awards.

Tim Jamison was born in San Jose, CA and grew up in neighboring Los Gatos, CA. He received his undergraduate education at the University of California, Berkeley. A six-month research assistantship at ICI Americas in Richmond, CA under the mentorship of Dr. William G. Haag was his first experience in chemistry research. Upon returning to Berkeley, he joined the laboratory of Prof. Henry Rapoport and conducted undergraduate research in his group for nearly three years, the majority of which was under the tutelage of William D. Lubell (now at the University of Montreal). A Fulbright Scholarship supported ten months of research in Prof. Steven A. Benner’s laboratories at the ETH in Zürich, Switzerland, and thereafter he completed his PhD studies at Harvard University with Prof. Stuart L. Schreiber. He then moved to the laboratory of Prof. Eric N. Jacobsen at Harvard University, where he was a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell postdoctoral fellow. In July 1999, he began his independent career at MIT, where his research program focuses on the development of new methods of organic synthesis and their implementation in the total synthesis of natural products.

Andrew Brusoe currently serves as a Principal Scientist of Process Research in the Chemical Development department at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals in Ridgefield, CT. He earned his B.A from Albion College before becoming a founding member of the Alexanian group at UNC Chapel Hill in 2008, where his focus was primarily on Rhodium-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloadditions. After completing his Ph.D. in 2013, hejoined UC Berkeley as a postdoc in the Hartwig group, contributing to projects involving Pd-catalyzed arylation of fluorinated amines, mechanistic studies of the Ullman condensation, and fluorodecarboxylation for the synthesis of trifluoromethyl ethers. In 2015, he transitioned to the flow chemistry group at Boehringer, specializing in developing flow processes to support colleagues in Ridgefield, CT, and Biberach, Germany. In 2020, Andrew assumed a role in process research, where he now oversees drug substance synthesis campaigns. His responsibilities encompass chemical process development and supporting medicinal chemistry, pre-clinical toxicology, and Phase I and II studies.

Joel Calvin received his BS in Biochemistry from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1990.  He obtained a position at Reilly Industries where he worked on optimizing the catalytic synthesis of pyridine and pyridine derivatives using fluidized beds as well as batch processes.  Joel obtained his Masters in Organic Chemistry from Purdue University at Indianapolis in 1994.  He joined Eli Lilly and Company in 2000 and began working on flow chemistry in 2008 and has been involved with several flow processes operated in manufacturing.

Dr. Fridtjof Schröder is Research Fellow at the Science & Technology Department at the Zürich Innovation Center of Givaudan in Switzerland.

1993 he completed his studies at the Freie Universität Berlin with a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry (unnatural amino acids for peptide hormones) under the supervision of Prof. J. Mulzer. After two postdoctoral years in the group of Prof. W. Oppolzer (organometallic chemistry) at the Université de Genève, another stay with Prof. G. Quinkert and Prof. A. Eschenmoser at the Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt (prebiotic RNA) and two years at Cilag AG Switzerland (pharmaceutical chemistry for Johnson & Johnson) he joined Givaudan in 1999.

His current process research activities are in the areas of homogeneous catalysis, cyclopropanation, flow chemistry and photochemistry for the development of fragrance ingredients.

He published more than 50 articles and patents and received the Sandmeyer award together with colleagues from Givaudan for outstanding work in the field of industrial and applied chemistry in 2023. He presented process highlights at numerous Scientific Update and other conferences.

Smith III, is a Director of Chemical Development at Asymchem where he is focused on process development and project management for large pharmaceutical as well as biotech companies.
