2nd Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry Europe Conference
Event overview
This event is aimed at enabling networking with industry, academia and women at different career stages, scientific presentations and motivational workshops on themes relevant to women and allies undertaking a career in Organic Chemistry.
Following the success of a US event ‘Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry’ EWOC, which first took place 2019, a group of scientists in Europe decided to organise a similar initiative as a ‘sister’ event, which was held at the Manchester Conference Centre in June 2023.
Recent data and publications show a persistent lack of women pursuing and maintaining careers in Organic Chemistry. Evidence indicates that providing an opportunity for women to meet, network, and share scientific and career strategies is one effective approach to encourage women to enter and maintain careers in science.
This is a not-for-profit event, supported through sponsorship and industrial registration fees.
- Registration is FREE to any chemist studying towards a PhD in Chemistry at a European University
- Academic Postdoctoral researchers can register FREE if they present a poster. However, places are limited, so you are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.
- Academic Postdoctoral researchers not presenting a poster will be charged £50 (+ vat) registration fee. If you are able to pay the registration fee, this will enable more students / academics to present a poster and attend without charge – thank you.
- Industrial Participants / Academic Faculty members will be charged £195 (+ vat) (Early bird £175 before March 10th)
- Male participants are welcome to submit a poster – please contact us, or complete the application form.

Inspirational Career Development Talks
Dr Hannah Roberts, is a women’s leadership coach, trainer and motivational speaker. She will be delivering the following workshop:
Intentional Careers™: How to Accelerate Your Career Even If You Have No Time
Are you so busy working in your career, head down: producing, producing, producing that you forgot to look up and work on your career at the same time? You are not alone. The strategy of ‘proving yourself’ is unfortunately a paralysis trap causing the feelings of being overlooked, underappreciated and underpaid for all of that hard work.
During this 60-minute workshop, you will be guided through the 6-step Career Pivots® Compass methodology to find balance, confidence and fulfilment. There will be a special focus on time and energy management so that you can create your biggest impact while balancing the things and people that mean most to you.
- Learn how proving feeds the self-esteem depletion cycle and how to remove yourself from this paradox by focusing on one elevating element.
- Discover how to unlock the mythical unicorn of work-life balance by prioritising 5 pillar areas in your life, fiercely protecting your career development with boundaries.
- Leave with three clear action steps and the accountability in place to kickstart your journey to an Intentional Career.
About our presenter:
As the founder of Intentional Careers™ and host of the top 10 UK podcast Women in STEM Career & Confidence > 30K+ downloads, Dr Hannah Roberts is an award-winning coach on a mission to eradicate inequality in the workplace by guiding women to design careers for fulfilment with a mindset for leadership to build progressive workplace cultures where every individual feels valued.

Hossay Abas obtained her M.Sci. and Ph.D. from Imperial College London, working on the synthesis of natural products and α-helix mimetics under the supervision of Prof. Alan Spivey. She then moved to the University of Bristol and worked as a post-doctoral research associate with Prof. Jonathan Clayden, working on the asymmetric synthesis of quaternary amino acids. Since 2019, she has been working as a medicinal chemist at Cancer Research Horizons (CRH), having spent the first four years of her time at CRH focussing primarily on the synthesis of steroidal based natural products and its analogues in the treatment of cancer.
Abstract
Dr. Giulia Moncelsi is a Solution Engineer at Elsevier since 2024, supporting customers in academia and government make the most out of Reaxys at their institution. Giulia joined Elsevier in 2020 as a Customer Consultant for the Life Sciences portfolio, which includes Reaxys, Embase, Embiology and other digital solutions. Giulia is currently based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Previously, she completed a PhD Degree in Chemical Science and Technology at the ICIQ in Tarragona, Spain. Giulia brings more than 7 years of experience in academic research as a trained chemist, is an active member of international chemistry networks and is regularly involved in organizing scientific outreach activities.
Sheenagh studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, followed by an MSc in Chemical Research at Queen’s University Belfast (working on the synthesis of cationic lipids as gene delivery vectors supervised by Dr William P. D. Goldring) and then 18 months working as a graduate medicinal chemist at Redx Oncology. Sheenagh’s doctoral research on the application of lithiation–borylation methodology to the total synthesis of complex polyketide natural products was supervised by Professor Varinder K. Aggarwal at the University of Bristol. After her PhD, she stayed in Bristol as a postdoc in the Aggarwal group and then with Professor Tim Gallagher, before moving to the University of Oxford in 2023 to take up her current position as a postdoctoral researcher working with Professors Paul Brennan, Yang Shi and Chris Schofield on the design and synthesis of novel chemical probes.

ABOUT EWOC
Recent data and publications show a persistent lack of women pursuing and maintaining careers in Organic Chemistry. Evidence indicates that providing an opportunity for women to meet, network, and share scientific and career strategies is one effective approach to encourage women to enter and maintain careers in science.
A team of US scientists had a vision of an annual meeting of women (students, post-docs, faculty, and professionals) who work or plan to work in the field of Organic Chemistry broadly defined, from all types of institutions (academic, industry, biotech, non-profit and government). A meeting was developed to consist of both science and career topics to provide support and guidance for the next generation of women chemists, as well as provide opportunities for professionals to learn up-to-date science, network, and share experiences.
Their goals were to (1) establish a peer group network for collaborating and recruiting; (2) afford a novel mechanism to provide advice and counsel for women organic chemists; (3) provide guidance to graduate students and post-docs making career decisions; and (4) provide community support to enhance retention of women in chemistry. This first meeting was EWOC 2019, held on Friday, June 28, 2019, at the University of Pennsylvania. The event was a huge success with 175 attendees from all over the USA.
EWOC is dedicated to equity, justice, diversity, and inclusion. We strive to provide a harassment-free experience for everyone. All communication should be professional; hate speech will not be tolerated.
Sponsorship
EWOC Europe is a ‘Not-for-Profit’ event being sponsored and organised by Scientific Update in conjunction with a committee of supporting companies. In order to make the event FREE for students / academics and for a nominal fee for industrial attendees, we are requesting sponsorship to cover the venue and workshop costs.
The levels of sponsorship will be acknowledged on the event promotion, conference programme and via signage at the event. Companies choosing the Platinum, Gold and Silver options, will be offered a table top in our ‘Marketplace’ – which is a non-commercial area where attendees can get support, career advice and information.
